This is my first "official" blog. In the world of academia, I needed something to take less seriously and an 'outlet' for my stranger side.
So here I ramble.
Hey... you should be happy! Higher gasoline prices mean less people driving and less carbon dioxide emissions. Prices of other goods that require trucking etc will inevitable rise but it is worth the cost for those people who believe the end is nigh from man-made global warming.
True committed environmentalists should encourage gas gouging so people find alternatives. LOL... so, sis, where are ya on this?
I don't know how you define a true committed environmentalist, but I'm no extremist. I'd like to think of myself as very conscientious about conservation and about being a generally compassionate person. Therefore, if gas prices going up makes people be a little more mindful about their wastefulness, then I am definitely in favour of that particular consequence. I would hope that people do not need to be encouraged to be thoughtful, but human nature is a complex and often disappointing reality.
I myself ride a bike or walk whenever possible, so it doesn’t affect me personally that much.
Hardcore environmentalist anti-corporation types might also be in favour of higher gas prices for the reasons you point out, while also being disappointed that all that profit goes into the pockets of greedy oil companies. I can see it causing a lot of dissonance in some people.
In plainer language, if people weren't naturally such assholes, we'd have low gas prices and people would just do what's best for the environment in the first place.
Yeah... now you have some indication as to why I purposely keep this blog 'entertaining'. I can get a little outta hand when discussing the real issues!
Not to worry. Even tho people are "assholes" things have a way of working out. With global warming there will be a decrease in demand in Canada for heating fuels, we will be able to grow California crops and decrease transportation fuels, and you will be able, Mich, to ride your bike to work all winter long. With the decrease in fuel consumption the supply will outstrip the demand and the price will probably bottom out. Oh ye of little faith!!!!!
Yeah I don't think they're assholes, I was being dramatic I suppose.
I have faith! I have faith in human nature to do the wrong thing! Hahaha. BTW, I rode my bike all winter long in 2005/2006. It was great. Maybe you have a point there Dad... ;)
